Viking long boat

Make a model of a Viking Long Boat and plan your voyage across the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. How many Viking warriors will your boat carry?

Have fun making models of historical objects. Models can be made out of Plasticine® or ModelMagic®. Plasticine is brightly coloured and can be re-used many times. ModelMagic dries and sets in 24 hours and can then be painted.

You will need:

  • Modelling clay, such as Plasticine® or ModelMagic®
  • Shortened wooden skewers (about 10cm long)
  • Cocktail sticks
  • Safe scissors
  • Paper and coloured pencils or pens
  • A bowl of water

To make the Viking long boat

Take a ball of modelling clay (a bit larger than a golf ball), and press and stretch it into a long rectangle.

Fold the clay in half lengthways. Pinch the short edges together to make the keel at the front and back of the boat. Shape the keel into an elegant curve, and curve the ends of the boat up and curl the prow into a spiral.

Mould the boat to create the distinctive flared bows of the long boat. Smooth the edges as you go.

You can also make small circles of clay to represent shields, and attach these to the outer edges of the boat – make sure you have an equal weight on each side to keep your boat upright. You can cut these with large pen tops or a small metal pipe.

You can make oars out of cocktail sticks with clay blades.

To make the sail

Cut a piece of paper about 12 cm x 8 cm and decorate it with a distinctive design.

Thread wooden skewer through the sail (whatever you use as a mast, make sure it is very lightweight or your boat will topple over). To protect your fingers put a small pad of clay under the sail. Then pierce the sail vertically in two places along the centre. The sail now has a mast.

Put a small ball of clay inside your boat, towards the front. This makes a mooring for your sail and mast. You might need to experiment with this placing, to ensure that your boat stays upright.

Launch your boat onto the water and send your warriors away on their voyage
